This year was a great opportunity for me to showcase all that I've learned through my undergraduate career at Ball State University. This project was done in Brian Hollars studio and is a reuse/redevelopment of the existing Star Press Building in downtown Muncie that is soon to be torn down...
The project uses the existing structure to house commercial tenant spaces on the first floor and house office spaces on the second floor. I placed a typical storefront facade between the structure that is covered by awnings that have frosted glass, creating diffuse light on the ground level. The second floor is treated differently at each facade. East and west facades have a perforated metal louver system on the exterior of the skin that is suspended from the existing structure. This system allows office users inside to manipulate the louvers in response to the low east and west sun angles. At night this perforated skin will glow and provide privacy for the users inside. The south facade uses the same awnings from the first floor but places photovoltaic arrays in the awning to shade the facade and produce energy.
The residential tower rises from the existing building at an angle in response to solar gain on the west facade that uses a double skin to passively ventilate and heat the building. The tower reaches over the south edge of the existing building to announce an entry point and its new high tech capacities.
The complex also features two plazas that replace two previous existing, masonry, load bearing buildings.
Feel free to make any comments, always welcomed.
